As a neurodiverse-affirming practitioner with lived experience, I work with a range of clients from ages 10 to their 60s. Most, if not all, are neurodivergent. However, there is much more to us than the label; as such, we slowly explore who that may be.
As a counsellor with a deep interest and lived experience in ADHD and its many friends, I am passionately committed to offering tailored support to individuals across the spectrum of diversity. I work with individuals at various stages of the diagnostic process, and those not part of the process at all. After all, this is not necessarily about labels, they aren't always helpful for everyone.
My approach extends beyond active listening and empathy; it envelops psychoeducation, and case management, including coordinating with medical teams, advocating for client rights, and aiding in navigating the emotional challenges that often accompany ADHD and related conditions.
A cornerstone of my multifaceted approach is skill-building, which empowers individuals to understand and regulate emotions, enhance interpersonal communication, gain self-awareness, meet personal needs, set boundaries, and explore identity. These skills are pivotal for fostering resilience and navigating life amidst the challenges that ADHD or other diagnoses may present.
Over time, my ability to see patterns and connect dots has refined my specialization, leading me to discern links between narcissistic abuse and individuals with ADHD. This insight, though coincidental, has evolved into a niche focus within my practice, enhancing my ability to address the complex interplay of emotional and cognitive challenges faced by my clients.
My practice is significantly enriched by regular supervision with my own ADHD medical specialist, who graciously took me under her wing. This mentoring relationship, coupled with my relentless research engaging with insights from a wide array of neurodiversity practitioners, provides a unique depth and breadth to my service. Moreover, my specialised training from Beyond GP on ADHD, focusing on the various health conditions affiliated with ADHD—underscoring my commitment to providing informed and comprehensive support. Exceptionally, this course, typically not accessible to counsellors, but in actual fact to GPs and psychiatrists was opened to me as an exception to the rule, augmenting the existing knowledge gained by what had become my special interest!
My adaptability and continual quest for understanding mirror the ever-evolving landscape we navigate together. I hold a particular interest in managing complex cases realted to health and body image, as well as a special focus on the 'late diagnosis grief process' and 'ADHD or Autistic burnout'. Additionally, I delve into the intricacies, acknowledging that there's a rich spectrum of experiences and challenges extending beyond the surface.
I work with identifying your needs and core beliefs, helping you unlearn some of the negative messages you may have internalised from your younger years offering insight that may reframe your perspective, perhaps enough to the point to create change.
I try to help you become more self-aware, dig a bit deeper to truly understand yourself, and be more self-compassionate, self-accepting and authentic.
As an ADHD/Autistic Clinical Counsellor, tailoring sessions to individual needs is critical. Brains wired differently may not work with mainstream interventions. I do consider the medical model, but also look far beyond it. I am comprehensive and use a biopsychosocial lens, looking for patterns to try to draw parallels and look for signs of a root cause as opposed to a band aid solution. I incorporate your own feedback and wisdom.
As a patient, I had to seek out my own answers, investigate, challenge the medical model and advocate for myself when following their advice went pear-shaped. I did my homework and stood up for myself, and made sure my voice was heard.
Knowledge is power, and I hope that my lived experience, genuine desire to help, dedication and justice sensitivity, (not to mention research skills) can help you in your journey and assist in a meaningful way.
